Sexism shown in a fiction character that I love
I love The Big Bang Theory, maybe the biggest
sitcom of all times, it’s a really revolutionary show because put the emphasis
in a forgotten group of the society, the geeks or nerds.
The show had a lot of good things, but also some
dark parts, one of those low points it’s the sexism. The biggest example of
sexism in the show are Amy Farrah Fowler, the girlfriend of Sheldon Copper the
protagonist of the show, and Penny the neighbor of the group of nerds.
Amy is a massive scientist and an independent woman,
the conceptualization of Amy’s character could have been more awesome if it was
not for the sexism in it. It’s a really awesome thing to have a female
character with a science background, but often in the show this comes to second
place. She is an accomplished women, but nobody could like her because of his appearance,
meanwhile all the guys in the sitcom feel lust for the opposite character,
Penny who is a hot waitress.
The shows promote the women stereotypes for
Penny who is hot and blond, so she must be dumb. Penny don’t even have a last
name, because it’s not important, like the character wasn’t worthy of a full
identity. Also many of the jokes from the men’s characters are very sexist and minimize
the roles of the women in the show.
